Our Guiding Principles

The core values that drive us at Sea Change Farm & Flower.

Bring a playful, positive mindset to our work

Flowers are a joyful medium, and life is too short to focus on the negative!  We will always strive to bring a sense of genuine positivity to our work.  This doesn’t mean a forced smile, but rather a searching-out of the lightness in any situation, and a commitment to resolving conflict or obstacles to make room for hope, optimism, and good vibes all around.

Collaborate with our clients

We do our best work when we collaborate with our clients in a deep and meaningful way.  Creative collaboration is where the true magic happens, and what keeps our work exciting and unique for us!  Your vision, spirit, and individuality are the best inspiration we could ask for–even if you don’t think you know anything about flowers.

Celebrate curiosity, wonder, and discovery

We believe the best floral arrangements celebrate the flowers themselves.  Our floral designs encourage you to take a closer look and discover the subtle details that make each flower uniquely lovely.  On our farm, we trial new flower varieties each season to satisfy our own curiosity as growers.  We’re always searching for new forms and textures to play with.

Honor the passing seasons

One of the best things about working with nature is the honor of witnessing it change.  It’s exceedingly special to watch the seasons slowly shift, through the lens of flowers.

In our floral design, we aim to reflect what’s happening that moment in the flower field outside.  Sometimes this means combining a pristine dahlia in full-bloom glory with a still-green bud full of potential, and adding a stem of golden-weathered basil gone to seed.  It’s about honoring the bounty of the current season, with a touch of acknowledgment for the elements fading from view and the ones yet-to-come.

Build community within our industry

A rising tide lifts all boats, and we firmly believe that a strong community raises us all higher.  From the vendor team we work with on a wedding day, to other floral designers who source their flowers sustainably, to the network of flower farms we work with in the Hudson Valley, and out to the agricultural community in general, we will always prioritize community spirit and collaboration over a sense of competition.

Create a great working environment at our farm & studio

For our own team, whether full-season employees or occasional freelancers, Sea Change Farm & Flower strives to be a safe & supportive working environment with clear communication, fair pay, equal opportunities for everybody, room for self-growth and personal education, and a healthy work-life balance.

Center sustainability in all that we do

We think of “sustainability” as the ability of an ecosystem to continue doing what it’s doing, indefinitely, and in a healthy and balanced way.

In an ideal world, our farm & studio would be a zero-in, zero-out system, in a beautiful cyclical microcosm that could sustain itself forever without hurting the environment: flowers turn to compost that grows more flowers, that yields more rich compost.  We’d be making candles from our own beehives’ beeswax, and building vases from the clay in our own soil.

In reality, we do our best to balance this crazy vision with the modern world. On our flower farm, we use all-organic inputs, encourage biodiversity, and create minimal soil disturbance.  In our floral design, we choose tools and techniques that create minimal-to-no non-biodegradable waste.  We source flowers (the ones we don’t grow ourselves) as locally as we can.  We avoid single-use plastic and recycle and reuse materials whenever possible.  We never, ever use floral foam.

Hold space for love of all kinds

We celebrate love in all its forms!  We are proud to provide florals for couples of all appearances and configurations.  We strive, too, to share images of diverse love, and to avoid gendered language on our website and in our communications with clients.
